In this issue, we would like to introduce some of the artists/musicians who have influenced Yuma Abe of never young beach.
Profile of Yuma Abe
Yuma Abe is from Tokyo and is in charge of vocals and guitar for Never Young Beach, which was formed in 2014.
Never Young Beach made their major debut in 2017 after various indie activities, and have gained a wide range of fans.
Its characteristics include a nostalgic feel similar to old city pop, and a pleasant sound that easily enters your ears.It is also known as the “Happy End of the West Coast” due to its melody reminiscent of overseas summers and the sea. It seems that there is.
The first song I ever heard by Never Young Beach was their signature song, “Bright Mirai,” and I was hooked as soon as I heard it.
They are said to be neocity pop, but there are many great bands like this in Japan, such as Nebayan, Yogi New Wave, and Suchmos, who were popular a little before Nebayan. I’m glad that such wonderful music is being properly evaluated and becoming popular. (For several years I was fed up with the hit charts of Korean Wave and idols…lol)
After that, Yuma Abe released a solo album in June 2021.
Singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart plays guitar on two songs. Haruomi Hosono is said to have mixed 4 songs, so be sure to give them a listen as well! (It’s such a good song, so why are there so few plays? lol)
Lastly… While researching this blog, I learned a new fact… Mr. Abe is the third son of actor Issei Takahashi’s brothers and is Issei’s younger brother by 10 years! I heard that both of his brothers are pursuing careers in the arts, so I think it was an environment where they were exposed to a variety of good cultures.

On the FM program “KKBOX presents 897 selectors,” which focuses on the music that has influenced artists and songs that they hope will remain in someone’s heart 100 years from now, Abe mentioned “Instant Death” by Hi-Lows. “I just said, “Cool!” Song selection by Yuma Abe. “I don’t know what’s right, I know what’s fun. I’m wearing half-dried pants and looking uncomfortable.” Aren’t these lyrics amazing? ! I was deeply impressed by the world of Mashima Masatoshi’s lyrics. ”(https://www.kkbox.com/jp/ja/column/interviews-0-72-1.html).Everyone except Hi-Lows is Japanese, which makes me happy lol
The overwhelming majority of artists who were influenced by the bands of my time as an administrator are from overseas, so I’m really happy that the second generation is emerging from the roots of Japanese bands, and I think that in the future, more than ever before, we will be able to create music that is uniquely Japanese. I think we will continue to develop this.
THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT
The quotation is as above.
Michelle is synonymous with Japanese garage rock! They’re such a legendary Japanese band that it’s strange that they haven’t come out before.
Bassist Abefutoshi passed away in 2009, and last year Yusuke Chiba, who was Michelle’s vocalist, passed away, and everyone around me who loved rock was pretty shocked. . He left behind a lot of truly great songs.
This is a video of Michelle at Fuji Rock in 1998.
Partly because the know-how of Japanese rock festivals hasn’t been developed yet, and unlike today’s festivals, the audience isn’t surrounded by iron frames, so the crowds are a bit overwhelming. The person in front of you is probably so compressed that you can’t breathe. In fact, many people apparently fainted, and as you can see in this video, they became so excited that they became dangerous and the performance was interrupted many times. . . . These are good times, and dangerous times. Rock ‘n’ roll! !
Another song, LOVE ROCKETS by The Birthday, which Chiba was active after Michelle, is famous as the opening theme song for the movie Slam Dunk. It is no exaggeration to say that the climax of this movie is the opening! ! !
Happy End
The quotation is as above.
The Japanese rock guru “Happy End” that comes up every time lol
I think many people already know about it, so please take a look at Mino’s usual “Introduction to Happy End! Answering questions you can’t ask now!”
You’ve heard the name many times, but what’s so great about it? If you think so, please take a look!
Haruomi Hosono
The quotation is as above.
Also, regarding “Happy End”, Haruomi Hosono is a solo performer, and he also co-starred with Mr. Abe’s solo, so I would like to introduce YMO among Mr. Hosono’s many activities! YMO is also a must have lol
Although only Mr. Hosono is still alive at YMO, he has had a great influence on the next generation.
Eiichi Otaki
The quotation is as above
“Happy End” again lol
For now, if you like Nebayan, Happy En is a must-listen.
Enjoy Mr. Otaki’s famous song “You are natural color”! It is also famous for its CM song.
